SEGUIN, TX – November 19, 2018 – While it’s no surprise to most high school students that nearly everything they use undergoes a manufacturing process, the goings-on of a plant still remain a mystery. Fortunately for the 60 sophomores from Navarro, Seguin, and Marion who visited the Minigrip plant in Seguin on October 5, the elusive aspect is now as clear as the resin used to make the plastic products there.
Minigrip General Manager Garth Bielke explained the significance of the plant opening its doors.
“The manufacturing sector is less glamorous to the youth than other career paths. It is important to expose our young people to the many opportunities available in manufacturing. With skilled labor in such a short supply, it is more important than ever to show those that will be entering the work force soon what manufacturing is about,” said Bielke
The facility, run by Plant Manager Brooklyn Streeter, hosted three tours, with 20 students per group. The tour included a hands-on cartoning process training for students, thanks to a mobile trainer especially designed by the Minigrip Cartoning Department. The trainer provides a controlled learning environment for potential hires without impeding regular production.
“The students loved it,” said Michael Zukerman, human resources manager. “They were given a short classroom session by our production experts and were exposed to the basics of extrusion and conversion. They were then taken to the plant floor to see the process firsthand.”
Mingrip has operated for more than 20 years and is an affiliate of Inteplast Group. Its products include reclosable plastic bags for a variety of applications such as sandwich and freezer bags, many of which can be found in grocery and general retail stores throughout North America.
